How do you build a sports partnership that works?

← Back to Insights

Many sports partnerships start with a logo on a board and end after one season. A partnership that works starts somewhere else: with what both sides want to achieve. This is how I approach it, in five steps.

1. Start with the audience and the data

Before you talk to a brand, you need to know what you have to offer. Who are the fans, what do they do and what is that attention worth? Data turns a gut feeling into an argument and shows which brands really fit your audience.

2. Hold a discovery call

Start with questions, not with a proposal. What does the brand want to achieve, who does it want to reach and what has it already tried? Only when you know that can you judge whether there is a match.

3. Make a tailored proposal

Every company has different goals, so a standard package rarely fits. Build the proposal around the brand's goal and show with a simple business case what it delivers.

4. Negotiate on value

A good deal is one both sides can stand behind. Don't only discuss the price, but also roles, duration and activation. That prevents discussions afterwards.

5. Activate, measure and renew

The deal is only the beginning. Carry out the collaboration, measure the results and share them with the partner regularly. Then renewal becomes a natural conversation instead of a new pitch.

Sport is the ideal stage for this: emotion, a loyal community and stories people share. Anyone who combines that with data and a clear plan builds partnerships that last longer than one season.
