Why fan insight is worth more than reach

← Back to Insights

"We reach 500,000 fans." Great. But who are those 500,000 fans? And more importantly: how many of them are relevant to your sponsor? That, in my view, is a huge commercial opportunity for football clubs.

Scattered data, no full picture

A club often already knows a lot: who buys a ticket, who regularly attends matches, who buys merchandise, who uses the app. But this information is often spread across different systems. The real commercial value emerges only when you bring that information together into one 360° fan profile.

How AFC Bournemouth approaches this

AFC Bournemouth provides a good example of what this can look like. The club wanted to better understand who their fans are, not just demographics, but also their interests, behaviours, preferences and brand usage. Using YouGov Sport, Bournemouth was able to gain deeper insights into its fanbase and build a more complete picture of its supporters.

That changes the commercial conversation

That also changes the conversation with a potential partner. Not: "We reach 500,000 people." But: "This is our audience. These are their interests. These are the brands they use. And this is why your brand fits our supporters."

Imagine discovering that a large part of your fanbase consists of young families, lives within 30 km of the stadium, has multiple children and regularly goes on day trips. You could then approach a Family Partner with a proposition focused on family experiences and activities. You are no longer just selling reach. You are selling knowledge of your audience. And that knowledge can keep growing.

From half-time moment to data moment

That knowledge grows through ticketing, merchandise, the app and CRM, but also by actively asking fans questions through surveys, quizzes, competitions and sponsor activations. A good example is the Fan of the Match Quiz by the Dutch football association KNVB. During half-time at Netherlands matches, fans can participate in a quiz via their phones. Fans register beforehand, meaning the activation not only creates entertainment, but also a digital touchpoint and opportunities for sponsor opt-ins. A half-time moment becomes a data moment.

The common thread

The better you understand your fans, the better you can determine: which partner, for which audience, with which proposition, and with which activation. Because reach is nice. Fan insight is commercial value.
